During the period between 1982 and 1986, the Environmental Protection Administration did an overview survey of soil conditions of over 1.16 million hectares of farmland, using 1600 hectares as a grid cell unit. The survey results were then evaluated and graded accordingly, using “Taiwan area soil metal contamination and grading scale” as a guideline. Survey results revealed that the overall levels of metal contamination were high, with over 3 million hectares of land graded as up to level 4 or even 5 on the scale. This survey provides a general outline and overview of the heavy metal pollution condition in Taiwan. The 0.1 N HCl extraction was used to measure the density of Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn, and Aqua regia digestion was used to measure the density of As and Hg in soil.
